Episode Four: Sharkey’s Bar - Annagry
The Wild Atlantic Way soars along cliff tops, curves and swoops down around beaches, winds through lush hills and around mountains. Eventually, the road squeezes between Northern Ireland and Donegal Bay before passing within a few meandering kilometers of Annagry. A short detour winds around to Sharkey’s Bar, where you will be welcomed in for a Proper Pint.
Episode Five: McDonnell’s Bar and Undertakers - Belmullet
In the northwest corner of County Mayo, Ireland, the Wild Atlantic Way rolls across green hills between two bays that squeeze the countryside as the road approaches Belmullet where it sits at the neck of the Mullet Peninsula.
And while the echo of ocean surf can sometimes be heard between the bays on Lower Barrack Street, whenever the door to McDonnell’s Bar is open, music tolls up through town. Songs echo off the stone faces of packed row buildings, the irresistible lilt a note of invitation into the public house, where Publican and Undertaker Padraig Conroy welcomes patrons in with a tune and serves up A Proper Pint.
Episode Six: Tigh T.P.’s - Ballydavid
Wandering along the far west coast of Ireland, the Wild Atlantic Way meanders a rugged landscape on what seems the edge of the world as it rounds the boundaries of the Dingle Peninsula. It’s easy to get lost in the striking scenery as the road drifts past islands and sea stacks, jagged cliffs and lush green pastures, beaches, shoals and piers.
From the top of Conor Pass, the land and the sea open up to magnificent vistas all around, while the road eventually snakes around Slea Head until the earth beneath disappears and the untamed sea opens up to merge on the far horizon with an infinite sky.
If one of those seasons seems a bit much, then curve on around Smerwick Bay until the road ends, and you will be welcomed by Sean and Fiona into Tigh T.P.’s for a Proper Pint!
Episode One: O'Loclainn's Irish Whiskey Bar - Ballyvaughan
In an age where technology and the pace of life have diminished interpersonal communication, a pub like this is a true gem.
